Wetlands and Wildlife: Communities | Spotlights | Itinerary | Maps | Images | GPS Tour

History comes alive in these places, which also offer lots of amenities for visitors.

Claflin

This small town sits at the geographic center of the state of Kansas. Its geology boasts a legendary vein of limestone, internationally important wetlands, and steadily producing oil fields. Day-to-day life mixes hard working farmers and hard living oilmen with shoppers who drive long distance to experience Claflin’s specialty Main Street, now completely dedicated to the retail sale of furniture.

Ellinwood

Surprise! That was the first emotion German immigrants felt when they arrived in Ellinwood in the 1870’s. They had been promised paradise, but in this prairie paradise there was no trees and the blowing winds were a constant. Today, Ellinwood is a tribute to the determination of those German settlers. It’s a postcard for small town America with tree-lined brick streets where families ride bikes after supper and kids safely roam the town.

Great Bend
You have reached the core of Walt Whitman's "Prairies and Plains," the defining American landscape. Don't let the word "plain" fool you, though. There is much to do here along the "great bend" of the Arkansas River! Visit our downtown area where you will delight in strolling the Birdhouse Art Walk and the Kansas Quilt Walk. Take time to browse the wide assortment of retail establishments. Plan for bird-watching, a bike ride, nature hike, take pictures along the river, and visit our historic sites connected to the Santa Fe Trail and
Exoduster migration.

Hoisington
This town sits in the midst of the Cheyenne Bottoms basin. The mystery and abundance of these giant wetlands is reflected in what is deeply valued here – community, family, faith, hard work, and respect for the natural world. This little town residents bring humor, optimism, and determination to each rebuilding, each celebration, knowing how it feels to be held in the hands of nature.

Hudson
The city park and the Hudson Community Hall welcome bicyclists and the Wheatland Café welcomes people from around the world for Sunday buffet. If you are searching for the authentic heart of America, you will find it beating here.

Stafford
Stafford is the gateway to Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. The community is rich in architecture, history, and small town charm. But it is the startling connection to nature that leaves an impression. This is a place where eagles soar and wild whooping cranes nest.

St. John
The heart of St. John is its picture perfect towns square, complete with a splashing fountain, and surrounded by historic architecture. St. John is truly a central Kansas crossroads – located three miles north of the junction of two legendary American highways, US 50 and US 281 and sitting near one of the oldest bicycle routes in the US – the TransAmerica Trail.
